Circle C Farm Loves Their Maremma Sheepdogs (& Why We Chose the Breed)

Have You Ever Heard of the Dog Breed We Have on the Farm called Maremma Sheepdogs?

The Maremma is a big, white or cream-colored dog who is lithe and has a grandiose and rustic appearance.

Also known as: Cane da pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese; Maremma, Abruzzese, Maremmano, Maremmano Abruzzese

Female: weight 66-88 pounds; height 25.5-26.75 inches

Male: weight 77-99 pounds; height 25.5-28.5 inches.

The Maremma Sheepdog is an ancient Italian livestock guardian dog that has been used to defend flocks for over 2,000 years, particularly against the wolf and other predators.

The Cane da pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese (the literal english translation of the name is "The dog of the shepherds of the Maremmano and Abruzzese") is an old breed, the "Canis pastoralis" a white sheep guardian dog, described two thousand years ago in ancient Roman literature by Columella, Varro and Palladius.

The Maremma-Abruzzese sheepdog has never stopped working. Think about it... wolves are certainly still alive and in the central Italian Apennine Mountains, right? To us, it only makes sense the region is still using  the dog to protect livestock.

WORKING DOG CHARACTERISTICS:
